The latest official version of Firefox that includes support for Windows XP and Windows Vista, especially aimed at organizations or public institutions with slightly obsolete IT infrastructures

For many day-to-day users, it may be unfamiliar that the Mozilla Foundation offers a product specifically targeted at medium to extremely large organizations (schools, universities, and other international companies).

One of the main problems with mass deployment of software in organizations may be the lack of widespread support. For example, imagine that a national school system has to change the entire browser system because a new version does not support some important obsolete features (but relevant to the system in question) or worse because of a security vulnerability.

It is under the nickname of Firefox ESR (means Extended Support Release), is a browser designed specifically for organizations that need broad support. To be more precise, Firefox ESR is an earlier version of Firefox with a deferred development cycle that aims to provide greater stability at the expense of the latest features.

Either way, the ESR line does not fully compromise security to achieve this goal. ESR versions are maintained for more than a year with important “point versions” that usually follow the usual versions of Firefox. These so-called one-time releases contain imperative security updates.

The previous Firefox 52 ESR: the latest version that supports XP and Vista

Prior to September 2017, the ESR channel was the site of previous versions of Firefox. This was the pre-quantum era, and then Firefox 52 ESR (which can still be downloaded) offered support for both Windows XP and Vista. This turned out to be invaluable for several international companies, at least for 2-3 years until they inevitably had to move to newer versions of Windows.

Firefox 52 ESR also provided support for Microsoft Silverlight and Java. Currently, the latest versions of Firefox ESR (60+) only offer support for the Adobe Flash NPAPI plug-in. Of course, the Firefox 52 ESR was based on the older version of Firefox, so WebAssembly was not enabled by default and the Fast Multiple Control Engine (Quantum) was not present.

The current Firefox ESR line

Firefox fans are sure to know that version 60 was a huge transformation for their favorite browser. Firefox went through a massive overhaul starting with its engine and ending with its look.

For the most part, Firefox ESR and Firefox share the same functionality. However, there are some notable differences. In the ESR version, Serve Workers are not supported by default, push notifications are disabled, and there is also an option to disable add-on signing apps.

Conclusion

The ESR branch of Firefox is something that really speaks to the level of commitment to all kinds of users that the Mozilla Foundation shows. Firefox ESR was and will probably continue to be one of the biggest “gifts” for administrators around the world. In short, with the help of Firefox ESR, Mozilla gives organizations around the world enough time to set up the mass deployment of a new version of Firefox and ensure that everything is in order.
